Side effects: Malarone Paediatric may cause mild side effects such as stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness, or difficulty sleeping. Most side effects are usually mild and temporary.
Additional precautions: Malarone Paediatric helps prevent malaria but does not replace mosquito bite protection. It is still important to use child-safe insect repellent, dress children in long sleeves, and use mosquito nets where needed. It is usually started 1 to 2 days before entering a malaria risk area, taken daily during travel, and continued for 7 days after leaving. Paediatric atovaquone/proguanil is licensed in the UK for children from 11 kg, with specialist guidance allowing use from 5 kg in some cases.
Risks caused by malaria: Malaria is a serious infection spread by mosquito bites and can cause fever, chills, headache, sickness, and muscle aches. In severe cases, it can lead to serious complications and can be life-threatening if not treated quickly.
